Some people hate 'em (that would be you, Janet Erwin), but I love the classic sugarloaf hatstyle:

For one thing it led directly to the big, silent movie ear topper, known as the Ten Gallon Hat. Now, it appears that this descriptive name also has a Spanish, source. The fancy sugarloafs of Mexico were often called "tan galon," en espanol, which means "very braided." Of course galon also means gallon in Spanish. So when Anglos heard the term, tan galon, they mangled it to mean ten gallon. Pretty zany, no?
