Dust Storms On The Mojave

August 1, 2015
Had a little time this weekend to noodle some dust and see where it goes. Well, invariably, if there's wind and dust, I go, on autopilot, straight to Mohave County (and by the way, I prefer Mojave with a "j" which sounds so much more authentic and historic, but alas, I am from the home of the unimaginative honkies):

Daily Whip Out: "Dust Storm On Lake Mohave"

Since I have an aversion to freeways, we usually go the back way to Pasadena to see Weston, and that means through Parker, Earp, Vidal and Joshua Tree. Even the paved roads out there are lonely and remote, which always makes me think of Wyatt and Sadie out there in a buckboard, trudging through the sand and I wonder what these same roads looked like in the 1920s.

Daily Whip Out: "Highway to 29 Palms"

For better or worse, both paintings came out of my subconscious. I had no preconceived idea of what I wanted. Just started noodling washes until the painting tells me what it is, sometimes at the last second.

"Self-consciouness is the enemy of all art, be it acting, writing, painting, or living itself, which is the greatest art of all."
—Ray Bradbury
