Took a couple stabs at the big Billy oil painting this weekend. On Saturday I started on the buffalo coat, leaving gaps for the under painting to shine through:



On Sunday, I blocked in the entire bottom, leaving a few patches to shine through the darkness:



Need to create a lantern glow emanating from the room behind the Kid to validate his facial highlight. Using quite a bit of dark blue and Indian red in the shadows. Avoiding black like the plague. Why? I think master painter Robert Henri has the answer to that question:

"Night can be painted so that it will be beautiful and true with a palette that does not drop into black but has instead a surprising richness in tone."
