Watched Rio Bravo last night (taped it off of TCM the night before). Realized I really hadn't seen it all the way through from the beginning. Enjoyed it but have to admit, John Wayne's hat is a tad on the goofus side. Kathy, who watched it with me, asked me if that hat was accurate and I told her this is someone, perhaps Wayne himself, modifying the Remington cavalry hat, via John Ford. It's interesting that the TV show "Texas John Slaughter" which ran on The Wonderful World of Disney at about the same time (1959) also celebrated this hat style:

I pitched [name removed to avoid lawsuit] on co-buying True West. What is my problem? Am I nuts? What would possess me to take that kind of abuse and then offer to increase it? Unbelievable behavior. Really shows my insecurities or something equally as goofy. Still, I continue to believe I could make the magazine into a winner.

The challenge was simple enough: every artist has 10,000 bad drawings in him. Here are today's efforts, 8,702 thru 8,711 (I upped the number of sketches per day to 10 because I'm getting impatient to finish this damn project!):
As you may notice in the middle panels, I visited David Hughes' website today. Really enjoy his work. Love his word balloons. Lots of integrity and style. Totally hand drawn in a period when absolutely nobody hand draws any lettering. Really makes it stand out. Bravo, Mr. Hughes!
