Just got this from Marshall Trimble:
"This morning at the Arizona Department of Public Safety Memorial Service I ran into an old friend, U. S. Marshal for Arizona, David Gonzales, and he told me the origin of the name 'Marshall,' is a Germanic word meaning roughly 'Keeper of the Horses.'
"I told him that was ironic because my last name comes from a Scotsman who saved the Earl of Bruce from an angry bull. Apparently he was a bulldogger. A grateful Earl of Bruce christened him 'Turn-the-Bull,' on the spot. Turn the Bull became Turnbull, then Trumbull and finally Trimble.
So it looks like I'm a 'keeper of the Horses' combined with a 'bull-thrower.'"
