Paul Andrew Hutton's long-awaited book, "The Apache Wars," hits bookstores today. I highly recommend the book and I must say it's the backbone of our joint efforts to bring Mickey Free to life in a forthcoming graphic novel and a cover story in the August issue of True West.
Since our last go round, in 2008, I have added a couple characters to the mix. One of them is Tom Horn, who was actually considered by General Miles to go on a special mission to take out the Apache Kid, along with Jim Young, a black cowboy who worked for a time as Texas John Slaughter's bodyguard. Together with Mickey Free (Gen. Miles would not allow any of the Apaches who were prisoners of war in Florida to come back) they head towards the border. The last night they make camp on the U.S. side and build their last big fire, before crossing into No-Man-s-Land:

In our story, Jim Young is a pugilist, bodyguard, Civil War vet and a no B.S. kind of guy (which is all but in the historical record). After listening to Tom Horn go off on a dozen tangents around the campfire and claiming full credit for capturing Geronimo, Young calls him on it.
