Chasing The Big West, Casa de Patron & Lincoln County Warrior Martin Chavez

 May 7, 2025

My artist friend Thom Ross got me hooked up with Michael Martin Murphey and Karla Morton— the Texas Poet Laureate—and with the help of Dan The Man Harshberger we all put out this gorgeous little book that you need to see to believe. It's a beauty (and it comes with a free CD of Murphey tunes!)

Chasing The Big West

My number one art patron, Craig Schepp, emailed me from Lincoln, New Mexico, to tell me he just spent over an hour with "two the most interesting people I have had the good fortune to meet!! And Cleis and Jerry care for their town, Lincoln!" Amen to that. The Jordans sold Craig their last BBB original painting, of Lew Wallace witnessing the serenade of Billy the Kid at Casa de Patron (which they operated as a B&B for several decades. Here are Cleis and Jerry handing off the painting to Craig. Great people, all of them.

Reworked a piece for the next issue. I thought we needed to see the riders just a tad more clearly.

"The Midnite Men Approaching Taiban Arroyo"

We're featuring The Real Hero of the Lincoln County War in the next issue and I thought the stellar piece by James B. Mills needed a little vaquero gravitas.

Daily Whip Out:

"Martin Chavez Lincoln County Warrior"

And, here is Mills' new book cover:

"An ant on the move does more than a dozing bull."
