One of my favorite characters in the Billy the Kid story is Deluvina Maxwell. As I quoted yesterday, she flat told off Pat Garrett to his face after he shot the Kid down like a dog. For that alone she gets my vote for Sauciest Female In New Mexico Class of 1881.
Her surviving photos show an old, grizzled servant for the Maxwells, but like most geezer gals, there was probably a time when she could stop a clock, to borrow an old phrase immortalized by John Cougar Mellencamp.
Yes, she could stop a clock.
"There's a black man with a black cat
Livin' in a black neighborhood
He's got an interstate
Runnin' through his front yard
You know he thinks that he's got it so good
And there's a woman in the kitchen
Cleanin' up the evenin' slop
And he looks at her and says, hey darlin'
I can remember when you could stop a clock"
—John Cougar Mellencamp, "Ain't That America"
