Going back through my sketchbooks I found this nice little set piece.

Part II of Authentic Westerns
A couple of days ago I listed Marshall Trimble's top ten list of what he considered the best and most authentic Westerns. Marshall is ten years older than me and I think his second choice "Shane" is a generational nod to the fifties when the film had the most impact. Recently, Scottsdale Museum of the West did a poll of their members and the top rated Western turned out to be Tombstone (1993) which didn't even make Marshall's list. This prompted a brash, young historian I know to weigh in. . .
Authenticity As Viewed from Down Under
"Okay, so here's my 10 most authentic—as in, realistic—Westerns, in no particular order....
• Ulzana's Raid 1972
• I Will Fight No More Forever 1975
• McCabe and Mrs. Miller 1971
• Unforgiven 1992
• Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid 1973
• Dead Man 1995 (one of the very few Westerns that provides a realistic depiction of people getting stuck by a bullet)
• Geronimo: An American Legend 1993 (The original script would have been better, but still pretty authentic)
• The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford 2007
• Lonesome Dove 1985
• The Revenant 2016
"Both The Wild Bunch and Young Guns would have made it were it not for the overblown action-hero endings."

"Nobody is bored when he is trying to make something that is beautiful or to discover something that is true."
—William Inge
I find "Mickey Rides In" very suggestive. I'm not sure if that says more about the piece or me, but I assume the latter.
