Calamity Jane: She Was As Raunchy As They Come

 June 4, 2026

So far I've done perhaps a dozen sketches on this topic which I love very much.

Daily Whip Out:
"Rurales Suspended In Amber"

"The Rurales topped the ridgeline at sunset and crossed over, suspended in amber."

—John Reed, "Insurgent Mexico," 1914

When it comes to cartoonists I admire, Garry Trudeau is towards the top of the list. I met him in Scottsdale years ago, on assignment for New Times Weekly but Garry refused an interview. He did, however spend five minutes telling me why he wouldn't talk to me and he was gracious and endearing. In a new piece of writing, Garry opens with a scathing review of his own work by the legendary Charles Schultz, of Peanuts fame, then goes on to praise the creator of Snoopy and in the process, drops this classic quote:

"There is no humor to be found in winning."

—Charles Schultz

Dang, that is profound. Meanwhile, we watched "The Third Man" last night and I thought the ending was one of the most honest and brutal I have ever witnessed on film.

"There may be more beautiful times, but this one is ours."

—Jean-Paul Sartre

Fools Hollow Swimmer

"He who poses as a fool is not a fool."

—Robert Greene

Heroes & Villains

"We put a purity test to our heroes that nobody could pass, but we give a pass to our villains that forgives unbelievable behavior. And that is an interesting American hypocracy."

—Noah Wyle

And, speaking of someone who falls in the middle. . .

Daily Revised Whip Out:

"One Peeved Puta"

And, just for the record, here's another nominee.

Ambiguous as ever, Calamity Jane

"Calamity Jane lives on—raunchy, unabashed, contradictory, and ambiguous as ever."
—Richard W. Etulaine
