Billy the Kid: The Final Word

 September 6, 2020

We're hard at work updating and finalizing my third and final book on this guy.

The Final Word

When I was 12-years-old I bought a bogus photo of Billy the Kid.

   That was 62 years ago.

I drove thru Lincoln for the first time, 42 years ago and I finally visited Old Fort Sumner and the Kid's grave, 36 years ago. I published my first book on the Kid 28 years ago and my second book, a very expanded look at the Lincoln County War and the Kid, 24 years ago. Over the past 20 years, during my tenure at True West magazine, we have covered, updated and refined virtually every aspect of the Kid's life. This newest book—my third—will be a compilation of all of the above. Is it the final word on the subject?

Hardly. But it is MY final word.

  1. a thought--work up a full figure line up reunion rendition of all the Kid characterizations from johnny mack brown up to last year's "the kid"--w/kid antrim in the middle, croquet mallet lying splintered at his .... i can think of johnny mack brown, michael j pollard, buster crabbe?,roy rogers, kris, emelio, paul newman, val kilmer, etc.- you'd have a more complete reference list than i- just an idea... my first thought but too trite perhaps, was a 'Last Supper' view, with the 'real' kid flanked by the most recognizable tv and film 'apostles' on each side....
