I have been painting for the better part of four decades and I never knew about "the lift." I stumbled on the technique, by accident, about five months ago. It involves gouache (opaque watercolor) and a wet brush with no paint on it. You hit a painted area with the water. Then you dry the brush and go back in and "lift" off the paint (the water loosens the pigment), which exposes the paint underneath. Here is an example I did this morning:
