Tom Horn Dog

May 4, 2016
Today is Betty Radina's 92nd birthday. Kathy (her number one daughter) and I drove over to her house with dinner and banana cream pie, last night We also brought champaign and toasted the frisky youngster. Happy birthday you Michigan babe!

Tom Horn Dog
The Apaches called him Talking Boy, because he could go on a bit. He actually spoke decent Apache, was a champion roper and accomplished scout. Mickey called him Tom Horn Dog, which Horn hated. He could be a surly bruiser, who was frisky with the ladies. One thing about the strapping cowboy was certain:

Daily Whip Out: "Tom Horn: One Cocky Son-of-A-Bitch"

If you are a fan of Remington, like I am, you may recognize this pose.

Frederic Remington: "The Scout"

I took out the cigar and added cowboy spurs and cocked his hat a little to the side, but I have always loved this sketch and thought it encapsulated the ideal army scout in Arizona, especially with the cocked hip and thrust out chest, elbows askew. When they make the movie of this story, the casting directors need to find an actor with some major hubris. I'm talking to you Ryan Gosling.

Daily Whip Out: "We Ride At Dawn"

As Horn Dog, Free and Young headed deeper into El Norte, the landscape took on a dreamscape ambience. Each of them knew they were going to have to gut punch their way across Sonora and deep into Chihuahua.
