Billy the Kid: Chapter And Verse

 October 2, 2020

Debating how many actual chapter heads there will be in the next Billy Book (BTKIII). Here are some of the contenders.

Chapter One: Kid Lost

Oh, the stories he could have told. He traveled by wagon from New York to New Mexico but his boyhood adventures have been lost to history.

Chapter Two: The Lawman

He rode with the Regulators seeking justice for the death of Tunstall.

Chapter Three: The Outlaw

He stole horses and cattle and he even "passed the queer" (trafficked in counterfeit bills), but he never robbed a bank or a train.

Chapter Four: The Fugitive

He passed as a girl and hid out in sheep camps, but he still got a bullet in the heart.

Chapter Five: The Ladies Man

He had more girlfriends on the creek than a little.

Chapter Six: The Legend

Chapter Seven:

The Dark Knight rises

The first reaction to Billy the Kid's death was "good riddance," followed several years later by "Who remembers Billy the Kid?" But with the invention of the Good-Bad Boy by Walter Noble Burns, in 1924, you can draw a straight line from the Kid to James Dean, Marlon Brando, to Elvis, to Steve McQueen, Kurt Cobain and Charlie Sheen and Johnny Depp, Sid Vicious, Evel Knivel, Jim Morrison, Keith Richards. . .the list goes on and on.
