In The Zone With El Rojo

June 6, 2018
Occasionally I stumble onto things that are more powerful than anything I could make up. I have a name for this, although I am hesitant to say it because it sounds so Hippy Dippy.

Come On, Don't Be Such A Woosie, BBB

Okay, I  call it channeling the Zone. I believe there is a powerful current somewhere out beyond our consciousness and while you can't tap into it with intention, you can be on the lookout for it, and recognize it when it lands on your shoulder.

"You sound like a Goddamn hippie."

You can't chase it and you can't corral it. In fact, the first thing you need to do is, let go.

Letting Go

All of our goals and desires are on the other side of fear. So many of my local heroes left their homes here and went to LA, without a plan, without enough money to support themselves. These would include fellow Zonies, Steven Spielberg, Gary Shandling, Linda Ronstadt, Vince Furnier (Alice Cooper) and Michael Blake ("Dances With Wolves").

I stayed back here in Arizona where it was safe. I was afraid of the unknown. I hate to admit it but it shows.

   But, I digress.

The Zone of El Rojo

He came to me while I was noodling a random vaquero. His backstory: he is the offspring of one of Saint Patrick's Battalion, more popularly known as the "San Patricios," composed of mostly Catholic Irish immigrants who fought on the side of the Mexicans against the United States invaders in 1848.

Because of his red hair and his contrarian ways, he is an outcast on both sides of the border.
